India stands at the threshold of a technological revolution as artificial intelligence AI rapidly becomes the cornerstone of innovation across sectors This transformation however is not just about algorithms data or digital prowess its about the physical and infrastructural backbone that will support this new era According to a recent Deloitte report the country will need an astonishing 4550 million square feet of additional real estate and a staggering 4045 terawatt hours TWH of incremental power by 2030 to accommodate the surging demand for AI driven infrastructure This requirement highlights the scale at which India must build invest and innovate to secure its place as a global AI powerhouse
The unprecedented rise in AI adoption is fundamentally altering the contours of Indias cities and industrial hubs Data centres once peripheral to the mainstream economy are now becoming the nerve centres of digital India These facilities will not only store and process vast amounts of data but also drive the countrys ambitions in cloud computing machine learning and advanced analytics Indias unique cost advantages such as lower land and labour costs a growing focus on renewable energy and a strategic geographic location make it a highly attractive destination for global data centre investments However the Deloitte report cautions that these advantages alone are not enough a holistic approach is needed to build a truly AI ready ecosystem
The report identifies six foundational pillars essential for Indias AI journey
Each of these pillars must be strengthened in tandem to create an environment where AI can flourish For instance real estate must be made available at scale and in strategic locations while power infrastructure needs to be robust reliable and increasingly green Network connectivity must be fast and redundant compute infrastructure should be scalable and secure and the talent pipeline must be continuously nurtured with new skills and research capabilities

Indias vision of becoming a global AI hub requires a fundamental reimagining of traditional data centre models The next generation of data centres will need to be equipped with high performance compute infrastructure scalable power and cooling systems and ultra efficient networking Government initiatives and incentives are already paving the way but more is needed For example the Deloitte report recommends introducing a separate category for data centres in the National Building Code and recognizing them under the Essential Services Maintenance Act which would provide critical support and incentives for specialized infrastructure development
The report also advocates for the establishment of dedicated data centre facilitation units to streamline approvals and accelerate deployment This coupled with the rising popularity of colocation models where multiple organizations share data centre resources and a growing number of state government incentives is driving a wave of new construction and investment These developments are helping India close the gap with global leaders in digital infrastructure making it an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and international technology companies
Publicprivate partnerships are emerging as a key strategy for scaling up AI infrastructure By leveraging the strengths of both sectors India can ensure that investments are targeted efficient and aligned with national priorities At the same time the report emphasizes the importance of strengthening research and development RD improving talent pipelines and securing vernacular datasets to ensure that AI solutions are inclusive and relevant to Indias diverse population
Indias strategic location at the crossroads of major international data routes gives it a unique advantage in serving both domestic and global markets As a critical node in the global data centre ecosystem India is well positioned to attract investments from tech giants and multinational corporations seeking to expand their AI capabilities The countrys focus on sustainability is also noteworthy with data centres increasingly adopting energy efficient technologies renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems to minimize their environmental impact
As global interest in Indias digital infrastructure continues to rise the governments proactive stance on policy reform and infrastructure development will be crucial Fast tracking approvals offering incentives and creating a supportive regulatory environment will help India maintain its momentum and emerge as a global leader in AI driven innovation
