In just eight years, Maharashtra’s real estate sector has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has now registered more than 50,000 real estate agents, a milestone that highlights the state’s commitment to transparency and professionalism in property dealings.
Mumbai stands tall as the epicenter of this real estate revolution, boasting over 11,800 registered agents-the highest in the state. Pune follows with more than 8,200 agents, including over 7,000 within Pune city. Thane claims third place with 6,700+ agents, while Nagpur, Nashik, and Sambhaji Nagar round out the list with notable numbers of registered professionals.
MahaRERA’s influence extends beyond Maharashtra’s borders. Agents from 150 cities outside the state-including New Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Goa-are now registered, reflecting the growing trust and reach of the regulatory body.
The journey to becoming a MahaRERA-registered agent is now more rigorous than ever. Since January 2023, agents must undergo mandatory training and secure a competency certificate. In May 2024, MahaRERA suspended the registrations of over 20,000 agents who failed to meet these requirements, underscoring the authority’s commitment to quality and accountability.
Agents are also required to publish half-yearly progress reports, detailing the projects they represent. These measures ensure that only qualified, transparent professionals operate in the market, benefiting both developers and homebuyers.
MahaRERA’s achievements don’t stop with agents. The authority has also registered over 50,000 real estate projects across Maharashtra-the only state in India to reach this milestone. Nearly half of these projects are concentrated in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, cementing their status as real estate powerhouses. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat follow with 27,609 and 15,322 registered projects, respectively.
Aspiring agents must register with MahaRERA, complete the mandated training, and pass the competency examination. They must also regularly update and publicly share details of their project involvement, ensuring transparency at every step.
