Surat- The Diamond City of India
One of the most prominent cities in the west, Surat is the eighth largest city of the country in terms of GDP production. It is also the ninth largest metropolitan area. It is 302 kilometres from the capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and located along the banks of the Tapi River. The centre of Surat is 22 kilometres from the banks of the river.
Surat today has done well for itself and can boast of being an important city to India because of the tag it received as the city with the fastest growing GDP in India. Another importance of Surat is that it accounts for 90% of the world&rsquo;s total rough diamond cutting and polishing. With such a repertoire of progress, the Surat real estate market is suddenly catching up on the other major contributing sectors of the city.
Avenues of Transportation in the City
Surat is served by all major modes of transportation such as railways, roads and airways. The Surat Airport enjoys direct connectivity to Delhi and companies like Air India operate flights from here. Flights from here to Rajkot and Bhavnagar are operated by Ventura Air. The Surat Railway Station is a part of the western railway zone under the Indian Railways. The important highways that pass through the city include Mumbai-Udhana Highway and Ahmedabad-Surat Highway. Middle Ring and Outer Ring Roads have been planned to reduce the congestion within the city. The city has some of India&rsquo;s multilayered flyovers such as that over Majura Gate. A multilevel flyover bridge has also been planned over the Tapi River and shall connect Katargam with Rander Adajan.
Surat is also a part of the golden quadrilateral highway system. The NH8 is connected to the city via a 16 kilometres long connector highway.
Surat&rsquo;s Economy
Between 2011 and 2012, the city was ranked eighth in India as per its GDP of $40 billion. In 2020, it has been estimated that the GDP of the city shall be roughly $57 billion, according to City Mayors Foundation. In 2010, the city&rsquo;s per capita GDP had been estimated to be $8,000 roughly.
The city&rsquo;s economy is founded on diamonds, textiles and gold and diamond jewellery manufacturing. The city&rsquo;s GDP grew at a rate of 11.5 percent between 2001 and 2008, which was the fastest growing in India. The city is a hub for diamond cutting and polishing, whose output is followed by Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China.
Surat is known for being a producer of textiles such as silk and polyester. It is also renowned for its cotton mills. There are more than 41,000 power looms in the city and 800 cloth wholesalers. Roughly 60 percent of the polyester produced in India is in Surat. Areas such as Olpad, Magadalla, Ichchhapore and Hazira INA have manufacturing hubs where companies such as Ambuja Cement, ABG Shipyard, GAIL, ONGC and Reliance PVC have their units located. Property in Surat is slowly attracting investors thanks to these major and global MNC&rsquo;s.
