What is mass timber construction?

Mass timber construction uses engineered wood products such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Glue-Laminated Timber (Glulam), and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) to build large-scale structural elements for multi-storey buildings. Mass timber is emerging as a low-carbon, high-performance alternative to concrete and steel for commercial, institutional, and residential buildings.

Common Mass Timber Products

  • Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT): Layers of wood boards glued at 90° angles; used for floors, walls, and roofs
  • Glue-Laminated Timber (Glulam): Layers of dimensional lumber glued parallel; used for beams and columns
  • Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL): Thin wood veneers glued in parallel; high-strength beams and headers
  • Mass Plywood Panels (MPP): Multiple veneer layers; used for flooring and walls

Why Mass Timber Is Sustainable

  • Carbon sequestration: Wood stores carbon captured during tree growth throughout the building's life
  • Renewable: Sustainably managed forests continuously sequester carbon
  • Low embodied energy: Wood requires far less energy to manufacture than steel or concrete
  • Lightweight: Reduces structural load and foundation requirements

Mass timber construction offers a compelling vision for low-carbon, high-performance buildings in the 21st century. While its use in India is still in early stages, growing interest in sustainable architecture and carbon-neutral construction positions mass timber as an important future option for green commercial and institutional development in India.
