What is Murphy bed (wall bed)?

A Murphy bed, also known as a wall bed or fold-down bed, is a type of bed that folds up vertically into a wall-mounted cabinet or unit when not in use. Invented by William L. Murphy in the early 1900s, it is one of the most effective space-saving solutions for small apartments and studio homes.

How a Murphy Bed Works

  • The bed frame is mounted to the wall with a pivot or piston mechanism
  • When folded up, it sits flush with the wall as a cabinet, bookshelf, or sofa unit
  • Modern Murphy beds use pneumatic pistons or spring mechanisms for smooth operation
  • The mattress stays attached to the frame and does not need to be removed
  • Some units include integrated sofas that transform as the bed folds down

Types of Murphy Beds

  • Vertical Murphy bed: Folds up along the length of the bed (most common)
  • Horizontal Murphy bed: Folds along the width suits rooms with low ceilings
  • Murphy bed with sofa: Sofa integrated into the cabinet face that moves as bed opens
  • Murphy bed with office: Desk and shelves built into the same unit
  • Twin/Queen/King variants available depending on room size

Murphy beds are an ideal investment for studio apartments, guest rooms, or home offices that need to double as sleeping spaces. Their modern versions are sleek, safe, and surprisingly affordable compared to the floor space they unlock.
