In a landmark achievement for Indian infrastructure, the tunnel constructed under the Missing Link project on the Yashwantrao Chavan (Mumbai-Pune) Expressway has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's widest underground road tunnel. The record-breaking structure measures 22.33 metres in width, surpassing all existing underground road tunnels globally. The official certificate was presented to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a ceremony on May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day celebrations.
The project, executed by Navayuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL), represents a massive engineering feat through the challenging basalt terrain of the Sahyadri ranges. The tunnel is a central component of the 13.3-km Missing Link project, which includes several state-of-the-art features:
Safety was a primary focus for the developers, leading to the integration of cutting-edge technologies throughout the tunnel network. The entire corridor is monitored 24x7 via a SCADA-based system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) to manage traffic and air quality in real-time. Advanced safety installations include:
The Missing Link project is designed to be an economic multiplier for the region, with an estimated investment of ₹7,180 crore projected to contribute up to ₹70,000 crore to the local economy. By bypassing the steep, winding, and accident-prone Bhor Ghat (Khandala) section, the new route reduces travel distance by 6 km and cuts journey time by approximately 25 to 30 minutes. This improved connectivity is expected to significantly boost the warehousing, logistics, and real estate sectors in both Mumbai and Pune.
Following its inauguration, the Missing Link has been opened to the public with certain initial limitations. From May 1 to October 31, 2026, access is restricted to light motor vehicles and buses, while heavy cargo vehicles must continue to use the existing ghat route for safety reasons. Authorities have set strict speed limits of 100 km/h for cars and 80 km/h for buses, with AI-powered ANPR cameras ensuring rigorous enforcement of these safety standards.
