Tesla India has taken a major step in its local expansion by leasing a 24,500-square-foot service centre in Mumbai’s Kurla West, adjacent to its upcoming showroom in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This high-profile move signals Tesla’s strategic entry into India’s electric vehicle market, with a clear focus on sales and service rather than manufacturing.
The five-year lease, signed with Bellissimo in City FC Mumbai I Private for space in Lodha Logistics Park, comes with an initial monthly rent of ₹37.53 lakh and totals nearly ₹25 crore, including a ₹2.25 crore security deposit. The facility will serve as both a service centre and warehousing hub, supporting Tesla’s growing real estate footprint in India, which already includes offices in Pune and Bengaluru, and showrooms in Mumbai and soon Delhi.
Despite the buzz, Tesla has made it clear that its current India strategy is limited to vehicle sales, not local manufacturing. Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy confirmed that Tesla is not interested in manufacturing in India at this stage, focusing instead on opening showrooms for direct sales.
Tesla’s move comes as India’s flagship EV policy opens the door for global carmakers to manufacture and sell electric vehicles in the country. While rivals like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Hyundai already have manufacturing operations in India—and Hyundai aims to make India its global EV hub—Tesla is taking a cautious, sales-driven approach.
This Kurla West lease is Tesla’s fourth major real estate deal in India, following high-profile leases in Pune, Bengaluru, and Mumbai’s BKC. The new service centre is strategically located within 10 km of Tesla’s other Mumbai facilities, ensuring seamless support for customers in the financial capital.
