Tesla’s Bold Entry: First Showroom Opens at Mumbai’s BKC

History was made on July 15, 2025, as Tesla unveiled its highly anticipated first showroom in India, setting up shop in the bustling Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This milestone marks the electric vehicle giant’s formal arrival in one of the world’s most dynamic automotive markets. The expansive 4,000-square-foot Experience Centre—reportedly India’s priciest auto retail lease—serves as Tesla’s flagship location in the country, with more showrooms expected soon in metros like New Delhi.

Positioned in one of the country’s most prestigious business districts, Tesla’s BKC store is now a magnet for customers eager to experience cutting-edge electric mobility. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who attended the opening, heralded the move as a breakthrough for Indian automotive design, innovation, and sustainability. The state government extended an open invitation for Tesla to set up manufacturing and R&D in Maharashtra, reflecting the importance and promise of Tesla’s arrival.

Inside the Showroom: The Model Y Debuts

For its Mumbai debut, Tesla has put the spotlight on the Model Y SUV, with six units imported from the Gigafactory in Shanghai for display and demonstration. The Model Y will be offered in two variants—Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD—each featuring a sleek, coupe-inspired silhouette, a dual-tone minimalist interior, a large 15.4-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and app-based connectivity.

With this strategic showroom launch, Tesla is testing the Indian market’s appetite for premium electric vehicles before committing to local manufacturing. All vehicles are being sold as completely built units (CBUs), resulting in a starting price of approximately ₹60 lakh for the RWD variant and ₹68 lakh for the AWD, reflecting India’s 70–100% import duties. These opening prices are notably higher than in global markets and underline the significance of India’s tax structure in the EV segment.

Next Moves: What’s on the Horizon?

Despite a wave of excitement, Tesla has yet to confirm plans for an Indian assembly plant or factory, as company leadership continues discussions with the government over import duties and incentives for local manufacturing. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Indian operations already include a dedicated vehicle service center and a 24,565 sq ft warehouse lease in Mumbai’s Kurla, as well as a flex office space in BKC—all within a short radius of the new showroom. The company is also importing Supercharger stations and plans to roll out fast-charging infrastructure in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru, to support the rapidly expanding EV ecosystem.
