Allahabad- The City Surrounded By Rivers
Previously called Prayag, which meant &lsquo;place for sacrifice&rsquo;, Allahabad has an interesting story behind it. It is believed to be the city where the creator of the world in the Hindu mythology, Brahma, gives his first sacrifice.
Also known as a centre for the Kumbh Mela, Allahabad is one of the ancient cities of India. It has been ranked as the world&rsquo;s 130th fastest growing city. It is at the confluence of three major rivers of India- Yamuna, Ganga and Saraswati and is the centre of the Allahabad district. Today Allahabad is famous for contributing a superstar to the Bollywood Industry, Amitabh Bachchan.
How to get around Allahabad
The city is served by the Northern Railways and has the Allahabad Junction. Four important railway stations- Rambagh City Station, Daraganj Station, Allahabad Junction and Prayag Station serve the various corners of the city. Trains to most cities of Uttar Pradesh such as Bareilly, Aligarh, Lucknow and Agra ply through here along with those to southern cities such as Chennai and Visakhapatnam. Easy accessibility to areas within the city has made property in Allahabad an attractive and comforting choice.
Much of the city has cycle and auto rickshaws plying through for shuttling between different neighbourhoods. City taxis are normally available on call but are more expensive than auto rickshaws. The UPSRTC buses are an important means of transport through the city. The NH2 is one of the important roadways of the city while the National Waterway 1 connects it to Haldia.
Allahabad also has its own airport which is 12 kilometres from the centre of the city. SpiceJet and Air India operate flights from here to Mumbai and Delhi. A route from Delhi to Mumbai via Allahabad was started in 2013. Airports in the vicinity are those of Kanpur, Varanasi and Lucknow.
Economy of Allahabad
Construction is an important pillar of the city&rsquo;s economy. As per the third edition of the All India Census for Small Scale Industries, there are above 10,000 small scale industries that are unregistered in the city. As the city harbours the development of progress, The Allahabad real estate market is turning out to be a large contributor to the city&rsquo;s economy. An industrial integrated township has been proposed over 1200 acres in the city by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India. Much of the wire and glass industries are centres in Allahabad. Both private and public sector firms have factories in Phulpur and Naini. The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited is building a refinery of capacity 7 million tonnes per annum in Lohgara with investment that has been estimated at Rs 62 million.
Important companies that are based in Allahabad include Alstom, Reliance Industries, Dey&rsquo;s Medical, Raymond Syntheticcs and Triveni Electroplast, HCL Technologies, Steel Authority of India and Hindustan Cable. The Civic Aviation Training Centre and Harish Chandra Research Institute are also located here. With the rise of MNC&rsquo;s setting up shop in the city, Allahabad has a bright and returning future. Various central and state government offices are also located here.
Lifestyle offered in the City
The lifestyle available in Allahabad is quite a modern one. There are numerous educational institutions, such as Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Information Technology have been established here. Schools affiliated to ICSE, CBSE and NIOS, apart from the state board are located here. The Allahabad University is the oldest one in the state, having been established in 1875. It attracts thousands of students from all over India. P Square Mall, Atlantis Mall and Vinayak City Centre are some of the malls in the vicinity. They were all established a couple of years ago and offer amenities which are comparable to that of big city malls.
