Bharuch or Broach is a city located at the mouth of River Narmada in Gujarat. It is the headquarters of the Bharuch district. The city is one of India&rsquo;s longest, continuously habited cities, the other one being Kashi in Varanasi, UP. It was a sea port and ship building centre and served as a coastal route for trading with the west since the time of Egyptian Pharaohs. Exports were shipped during annual monsoon winds which made Bharuch a key sea-land trade route to the Roman and Greek empires.
In today&rsquo;s time, Bharuch is dominated by industries such as dairy products, long staple cotton, chemical plants and textile mills. The largest liquid cargo terminal of Gujarat is located here. Several multinational companies like Reliance, BASF and Videocon have their factories and offices here. The city is known for its black soil which is good for cotton cultivation. Bharuch is also famous for its salty peanuts.

Transportation
The National Highway 8 that connects Mumbai with New Delhi passes through Bharuch. The Bharuch Railway Station is a part of the Western Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The Bharuch Railway Junction is a busy one as it handles almost 40 pairs of trains on Delhi Mumbai line through Ahmedabad. Some of the trains that halt here are Vadodara Mumbai Express, Mumbai Central Jammu Tawi Swaraj Express, Ahmedabad Mumbai Shatabdi Express etc. Daily trains departing from the junction connect Bharuch to all major Gujarati cities. Trains to Bikaner, Ajmer, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bilaspur, Pune, Kozhikode and Mangalore depart from here. Narrow gauge trains from Bharuch to Jambusar and Dahej are also operated from here.
Local transport within the city is provided by auto-rickshaws mainly. Interstate and Intra-district buses also ply from here. The Golden Bridge links Bharuch to Ankleshwar across River Narmada. The bridge is 132 years old. Interstate buses from Bharuch take the National Highway 8 to travel to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi.
The closest airport to Bharuch is in Surat and Vadodara, which are both approximately 72 kilometres from here.
Economy
Apart from being a trading centre, Bharuch was known for its peanut processing and marketing industry. Peanuts produced elsewhere were brought here for processing. Bharuch is also known for its Bandhni clothing design. Bharuch is at present heavily industrialized as it has chemical plants, textile mills, dyes, fertilizers and paints. The GNFC Ltd, a fertilizer and chemical products manufacturing company is situated in Bharuch&rsquo;s Narmadanagar. Other companies present here include Guardian Corporation, Meghmani, Zydous Cadila, Heubach Colors and Survival Technologies. Numerous public sector companies such as ONGC and NTPC are also located here and Ankleshwar.
Petronet LNG Ltd. has established India&rsquo;s first LNG regasification and receiving terminal in Dahej. Other companies that are located here include ABG Shipyard, Reliance and Adani.
Lifestyle
There are quite a few schools and colleges which impart education in Gujarati and English media in Bharuch. The schools are affiliated to CBSE, ICSE or the Gujarat Board. Various colleges such as SVM Institute of Technology which offer undergraduate and postgraduate studies are located here. Bharuch also has a medical college and numerous pharmacy colleges. The Shree Narmada Sanskrit Ved Pathshala is an institute that is 115 years old and offers education in Sanskrit at the school, graduate and postgraduate stages. Subjects taught here include Nyaya, Vyakrana, Jyotisha and the Vedas.
Bharuch has various clinics and hospitals which are run by private entities or the government. A few of them are managed by charitable trusts as well. Clinics owned by medical professionals and private practitioners also see patients.
The boom in the retail sector has led to a rise of multiplexes and shopping malls in the city. Reputed brands such as V-Mart, Reliance Hyper Market and Big Bazaar are there in Bharuch.
Bharuch real estate is mostly concentrated in areas such as Ankleshwar and Zadeshwar. Bharuch property comprises mostly of apartments and individual houses at present.
