Bhavnagar: City of the World&rsquo;s Biggest Ship Breaking Yard
Bhavnagar was established in 1724 and was the capital of the princely state of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. The city is 198 kilometres from Gandhinagar, the state capital and is towards the west of Gulf of Khambat. The city is home to several small and large scale industries. The world&rsquo;s ship breaking yard is only 50 kilometres here at Alang.
Transportation
Bhavnagar is well-linked to other cities in Gujarat such as Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad through bus services operation by the state&rsquo;s transport corporation. Private players such as VTCOS also offer intercity bus services. Bhavnagar is also connected to cities such as Kochi, Surat, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai and New Delhi through railways. Thousands from the city are employed in the trade of diamond polishing and firms based here have outlets in Antwerp, Mumbai and Surat. After Surat, Bhavnagar has the largest diamond polishing and cutting industry in India. Other industries that are significant in the city include chemicals, ship building, plastics, ship breaking industries and salt.
Bhavnagar is the biggest salt producer which produces 34,500 tons annually. The Alang ship breaking yard is the largest in the world, recycling almost 50 percent of the world&rsquo;s salvaged ships. The ship breaking industry supports other manufacturing activities such as re-rolling mills, oxygen bottling plants and fibreglass reinforced plastic boats. Tamboli Castings Limited, SteelCast Bhavnagar, Alcock Ashdown and Elite Chemicals are some of the companies based here. Most of the industries in Bhavnagar are clustered around Nari Road and Ruvapari Road.
Quite recently the district saw a spurt in food processing industries. The city acts as a trading point with other parts of the city such as Rajkot and Ahmedabad for attracting investments. Small scale industries that are here in the cities include glass and ceramics, chemicals, textiles and servicing and repairing. Provide employment opportunities to thousands.

The city has both English and Gujarat medium schools which are affiliated to the state board, ICSE or CBSE. The Sheth J P Govt. Ayurveda College is affiliated to the Gujarat Ayurved University attracts hundreds of students every year for the BAMS Ayurvedacharya course. The Bhavnagar University or the Maharaka Krushan Kumar Sinhji Bhavnagar University offers research and teaching programs in Medicine, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Arts, Law and Rural Studies. There are twenty five departments and eighteen post graduation centres under the university.
The city has its own Ayurvedic hospital, the Tapibai Ayurvedic Hospital which is a part of the Sheth J P Govt Ayurveda College. Private hospitals in the city include Sir T Hospital and Sterling Hospital.
