Dindigul : Home to the Chinnalapatti Silk
Dindigul is a city and administrative headquarters of the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu. It is 100 kilometres away from Tiruchirappalli or Trichy and 420 kilometres from Chennai, towards the southwest. Dindigul was recently upgraded to a municipality. It has several industries spread over such as agricultural trading, agricultural machinery, administrative services, leather, lock making, education and banking.
Transportation
Dingidul has three highways passing through it- the NH 7 connecting it to Madurai, NH 45 that connects Kanyakumari to Chennai and the NH 209 that goes on to Bangalore through Sathyamangalam. The Bathalagundu and Natham Roads are two state highways that pass through the city. Several district roads pass through Dindigul to other areas of the district as it is the administrative headquarters.
The town bus service serves the local populace for commutes within the city. Private firms operate minibus services through the town. There are 128 different routes in the city on which 150 buses ply. The Kamarajar Bus Stand is the central bus terminus of the city, located in the centre of the city. The TNSTC operates regular bus services to other cities of Tamil Nadu. Long distance buses to Tirupati, Bangalore and Chennai are operated by the State Express Transport Corporation. On call taxis and autos are other convenient modes of transportation within the city.
The Dindigul Railway Station was founded in 1875 when the railway line between Tuticorin and Trichy was built. It is along the railway routes between Madurai and Chennai and Madurai to Karur. A connecting line to Palani passes through Dindigul as well. The closest international and domestic airport is at Madurai, 70 kilometres from here.
Economy
The participation of urban workforce in Dindigul was around 35.24 which have grown over the years. Mostly the tertiary and secondary sectors are growing as more people have shifted it from primary sector. There are several trading centres, handloom and industrial estates located through the city. The city houses one of the industrial estates of the district. The city has at least 165 manufacturing units, 60 tanneries and several cotton spinning mills. Almost 90 percent of the city&rsquo;s workforce is in the tertiary sector.
Steel safe and lock making are operated as co-operatives in Dindigul. The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology has filed for geographical indication for locks made in the city as they are exported in large quantities. The city has the second biggest textile spindling capacity of the state after Coimbatore. The famous Chinnalapatti Silk is produced 11 kilometres away from Dindigul. Agro, handloom and leather industries have gained traction in the city as industries. Fruits such as pineapple, orange, guavas and sapota are produced here.
The tobacco industry is quite prominent in the district and is a source of employment here. The research centre for tobacco organized by the central government is located here. It is the largest trading centre in Tamil Nadu for scented betel nuts and chewing tobacco.
Lifestyle
The city has nineteen municipal primary schools, twenty three primary schools and numerous middle and higher secondary schools. The city has ten private schools. The Gandigram Rural University is the only one in Dindigul. Others that are located nearby are Agni School of Business Excellence.
The municipal corporation maintains five maternity homes, four dispensaries, an ayurvedic centre, three siddha centres and eight family planning ones. The Government District Headquarters Hospital serves the locals with 350 beds. There are more than five private hospitals in the city. The St. Joseph Mission Hospital is a reputed private hospital of Dindigul and has 250 beds to treat patients. The city has a blood bank as well. The treatment offered in these hospitals is very preliminary. For advanced medical treatment, one needs to travel to Madurai.
Dindigul real estate is emerging rapidly thanks to the affluent locals. Most prefer property in Dindigul as plots and independent row houses. For buying Dindigul property, one can consider urban areas such as Batlagundu and Kodaikanal. The former has plots available for Rs 550 per sq ft while the latter has villas of various configurations available for Rs 4000 to 4500 per sq ft.
