Durgapur - Steel City of West Bengal
Located in the Burdwan district of West Bengal, Durgapur is the state&rsquo;s second largest city in terms of population and area. It is around 170 kilometres away from Kolkata via road. The Durgapur Urban Agglomeration includes Durgapur City, Baunara and Arrah.
Durgapur property market is rapidly catching up with the apartment culture and making way for large housing societies rather than independent houses.
Transport
Durgapur enjoys good connectivity to areas via the SH9 and NH2. It acts as a gateway to Rarh, which is under-developed in terms of transportation infrastructure. The NH60 passes through the northwest of Pandabeswar and then through Raniganj and on to Odisha. The AH1 passes through Durgapur which connects Japan to Turkey.
Durgapur City is connected to all important hubs of West Bengal via railways. Certain long distance trains to Delhi, Amritsar and Dehradun such as Poorva Express, Kalka Mail, Sealdah Rajdhani Express and Doon Express halt in Durgapur. The Durgapur Railway Station is at Andal, 15 kilometres from the CBD Durgapur. The Sainthia Andal branch of the Eastern Railway Zone serves the city.
Durgapur has several bus termini such as City Centre, Station Morh and Benachiti I and II. A dedicated bus stand for intercity travel is being developed at Nadiha. Buses to areas such as Kalyani, Digha, Bankura, Mukutmanipur, Morgram and Bhagalpur ply from here. Both NBSTC and SBTC have their depots here.
Travelling within the city has been made easy via the privately operated mini uses. They ply on different routes. CNG autos are available that ply from the City Centre to other parts of the city. Cycle rickshaws are available for shorter distance. Quite recently, pre-paid taxis were introduced from Durgapur to City Centre Terminus and the Station.
The country&rsquo;s first aerotropolis and privately managed airport has come up in Durgapur&rsquo;s Andal. The project was developed in association with the Changi Airport. The airport has a capacity of handling 1 million passengers in a year. Currently, the airport has Pawan Hans Helicopter Services and Alliance Air aircraft service, both operating from Durgapur to Kolkata. Flying time from Kolkata to Andal Airport is around 40 to 45 minutes. The airport is 22 kilometres from the Durgapur Railway Station and 15 kilometres from the City Centre. The closest international airport to Durgapur, however, is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, 163 kilometres from here.
Economy
Durgapur is one of India&rsquo;s planned cities and is home to one of the biggest industrial units of West Bengal, the Durgapur Steel Plant. Durgapur Thermal Power Station, Durgapur Projects Limited, NSPCL and Damodar Valley Corporation are some of the other public sector enterprises based in Durgapur. In recent years, several metallurgical units have come up in the city. Large to middle scale industrial investments for value added items such as TMT bars, wire rods, sponge iron and iron casting powder were established in recent times. Companies such as Stolberg India, MB Group, SPS Group, Neo Metallic and Jai Balaji Group have units here.
In recent times, Durgapur has been welcoming of new age industries and IT and ITeS firms, real estate, education and retail have taken off in a big way. A software technology park or STPI has come up in Durgapur along with stadiums and hotels. Hinduja Global Solutions Limited has constructed an Eastern Developmental Centre in Durgapur.
Lifestyle
Healthcare facilities in Durgapur are provided both by government hospitals and private ones. The Durgapur Sub Divisional Hospital and DSP Main Hospital are two of the hospitals operated by the state government in the city. Some of the private hospitals are MAMC and Vivekananda Hospitals. The city also emphasizes on quality education, being home to an NIT (previously known as Regional Engineering College) and Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (an initiative of CSIR).There are several good schools in the city such as Carmel High School, St. Xavier&rsquo;s School and Assembly of God Church School. With the expansion of the retail sector, Durgapur has seen a rise of malls such as Junction Mall and Dreamplex Mall which cater to the local populace.
Durgapur real estate is flourishing in recent times as several co-operative housing properties are coming. Real estate developers like the Shrachi Group are taking an interest in developing property in Durgapur.
