Guntur is the administrative capital of the Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh. It has been included under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region and is governed by the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority. It has the third highest population among cities of Andhra Pradesh and is known for its e-commerce industry, business and educational sectors. The city is known to be an exporter of cotton, tobacco and chillies and is the biggest producer of chillies in the country.
Transportation
The city is connected to India&rsquo;s major cities via state and national highways. The NH5 passes through here which connects it to Chennai and Kolkata. This highway is also connected to the Asian Highway Network. The SH2 connects Guntur to Nalgonda and Hyderabad and passes through Nagarjuna Sagar which is a famous tourist destination. APSRTC buses serve the city and they depart from NTR Bus Terminus.
Guntur Junction is an important station under the Indian Railways System. Most state capitals and the metro cities included can be accessed via the transit point. Stations to serve Greater Guntur are coming up which are known as University Centre, Nallapadu and New Guntur.
The city has no airport of its own although a proposal has been put forth to develop an airport towards the southwest of the city. The closest domestic airport is in Vijayawada while the nearest international airport is in Hyderabad.
Economy
The city&rsquo;s outskirts are where most people are engaged in agriculture. The River Krishna and Guntur Branch Canal are the two sources of irrigation in the region. The major crops produced here are chilli, tobacco, cotton and paddy. A global spice park is being set up in Guntur, which will be a first. The city also hosts the biggest Asian market for chillies.
Most of the industries in Guntur are on a medium scale. The workforce of the city is educated and largely skilled. Some of the prominent industries in Guntur include dairy, silk and textile mills, fertilizers, biotechnology, granite, zinc ore processing, diamonds and jute. A textile hub is under construction towards the southwest of the city and the government encourages setting up new industries. The Guntur Coastline is situated 64 kilometres away from the main city and efforts are being made to reclaim its shore points as harbours. A chemical park has also been considered for construction. At present Guntur is dependent upon Chennai for its trades. The Guntur Container Terminal close to Marripalem is an inland container depot which facilitates port operations in the Guntur Area.
