Jhansi - Gateway to Bundelkhand
Jhansi is one of India&rsquo;s well-known historic cities, particularly for its role in the sepoy mutiny of 1857. The city is located along the banks of Pahuj River, towards the extreme south of Uttar Pradesh. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Jhansi district. The city is 292 kilometres from the state capital of Lucknow and 415 kilometres from New Delhi.
Transport
Jhansi is well linked to all important towns of Uttar Pradesh via railway and road networks. The routes from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and from West to East pass through the city. The National Highways Development Project has supported Jhansi&rsquo;s development. A Greenfield Airport has been planned for Jhansi.
Jhansi Junction is an important technical stoppage and intercity hub for superfast trains. It is a part of North Central Railways Zone. Trains from Jhansi go to various parts of India such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi, Madurai, Mumbai and Lucknow among other cities. Jhansi is along the Mumbai Delhi and Chennai Delhi lines. Some of the trains that pass through Jhansi include Bhopal Express, Andhra Pradesh Express, Kerala Express and Dakshin Express. Jhansi is located at the confluence of several National Highways, namely NH 12A, 25, 26, 75 and 76. The routes proposed for the Golden Quadrilateral Highway cross and pass each other only at Jhansi. The roadways to five different directions diverge from here.
Jhansi has its own airport but it is mainly used by political visitors and the Indian army. Civil aviation companies do not operate flights to the destination despite there being provisions to land aircrafts here. The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced to construct a Civil Aviation Airport in Jhansi in 2011 for supporting tourism in Bundelkhand. Three spots have been examined by the government for constructing the airport for civilians, which will be far away from the military base. The nearest airport to Jhansi is at Gwalior, 103 kilometres away.
Economy
Jhansi is mainly an agrarian district with a significant part of the population working as beedi binders. Almost 10,000 people are involved with the beedi industry of the city. Several central government offices such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Government Cotton Mills are located here. Several stones and minerals are found in the hilly areas of Jhansi which are mined and polished by companies like Sushil Stone Industry and Sanjay Stone Gramodyog. Tourism is also a revenue generating sector of the city as it has several historical forts and is along the tour of Bundelkhand.

Jhansi has various centres of higher education such as Bundelkhand Degree College along Gwalior Road, Bipin Bihari College in Jhokan Bagh and Arya Kanya College in Sipri. Schools in Jhansi that provide quality education include Jacob High School in Sipri Bazaar and St. Stephen&rsquo;s Global School on Shivpuri Road. Healthcare facilities in Jhansi are well-developed as evident from the fact that it has its own medical college- Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College.
