Kolhapur - The Land of Temples
Kolhapur was the center of the Shilahara dynasty. King Gonka was said to be bitten by a snake and was susequently healed by a Jain monk. That is why a temple was built by Gonka for Lord Neminath, the enlightened being. Kolhapur, the historic Maratha City, has also been termed as the city of palaces and gardens.
Kolhapur is located by the Panchganga river basin in Maharashtra. The city is the administrative headquarters of Kolhapur district. The city is 380 kilometres from Mumbai and was a princely state prior to independence.

Transport
Kolhapur is a junction on the western line of the Indian Railways. Economy
Kolhapur is a hub of textile manufacturing, especially Kolhapuri chappals which are crafted from buffalo leather and dyed using vegetable dyes. Other handicrafts that are available in the city include hand block printed textiles, jewellery, wood carving, lacquer utensils and pottery. There are almost 300 foundries in the city which produce exportable items worth Rs 15 billion in a year.
The city is also a tourist attraction for its Tara Rani Equestrian Statue, a statue of Lord Ganesh which measures 85 feet and a statue made of bronze of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Kolhapur is the centre of the Marathi Film Industry. It all started with the establishment of Maharashtra Film Company in 1929 by Baburao Painter. The city has several film festivals, the recent one being Kolhapur International Film Festival. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra had announced in 2012 the making of a new Film City in Kolhapur.
