Mathura is around 50 kilometres from Agra and 145 kilometres from Delhi. The closest urban area to Mathura is Vrindavan, 11 kilometres away. It is one of the seven holy cities of the Hindus. Long back, the Keshav Dev Temple was built on the site of Krishna's birthplace, which was also an underground prison. Mathura was the capital of the Surasena Kingdom, ruled by Kansa the maternal uncle of Krishna.
The city is the administrative headquarter of the Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh and is one of the chosen heritage cities for Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana or HRIDAY, by the Indian Government. This has generated considerable demand for property in Mathura among investors.
Transport
Mathura has its own railway stations which are connected to major cities of India such as Jabalpur, Bhopal, Alwar, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. The NH 11 traverses from here to Agra and Bikaner while the NH 93 goes to Moradabad. The Yamuna Expressway is used by travellers who want to reach Noida, Delhi or Agra by the quickest way.
Within the city, buses operated by the UPSRTC and JNNURM operate within the city while state buses of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chandigarh also ply through here. Direct buses to Haridwar, Meerut, Kanpur and Lucknow are available from Mathura.
Economy
One of the main contributors to Mathura&rsquo;s economy is the Mathura Industries. The Mathura Refinery located near to the city is one of the largest oil refineries of Asia. The refinery is operated by the Indian Oil Corporation and has been awarded the ISO 14001 for Environment Management System.
Other industries which are prioritized in Mathura are fabric dyeing, sari printing and textile manufacturing. There are several SMEs in Mathura which produce water taps and household decorative items. The city is known for its milk production and milk by products as well such as burfis and pedas. It has been aimed that flights should be made operational within five years to cities such as Varanasi, Ujjain, Mumbai and Delhi.
