Panipat is a historic city which is located in the Panipat district of Haryana. The city is 169 kilometres towards the south of Chandigarh and 90 kilometres towards the north of Delhi. The city is known as the city of weaver.
Transport
The Panipat Railway Station is a part of the Northern Railway Zone and is on the Kalka Delhi Line. The city is well connected to other parts of Punjab and Haryana via Haryana State Road Transport Corporation and Punjab Roadways buses, particularly because it is along the Chandigarh Delhi route. The GT Road or National Highway passes through Panipat. Quite a lot of commercial and trading activities are carried out in the settlements along the GT Road. The Panipat Elevated Expressway has been made functional recently on the Amritsar Delhi route. It is 10 kilometres long and six-lane wide and is an uplifted portion of the national highway.
Economy
The primary economic activity in the city is weaving of carpets and textiles. It is the largest centre for carpets and quality blankets in India and has a handloom weaving sector. Panipat is also the largest centre for the Shoddy Yarn in the world. Blankets are woven through the use of power and hand loom.
The Samalkha sub-division of Panipat is being developed as an industrial belt. It has a foundry for agricultural instruments.
