Raigad: Capital of Shivaji Maharaj
Raigad is a district in Maharashtra which is situated in the Konkan area. The area is named after the Raigad Fort which was the capital of Shivaji Maharaj, the Maratha leader. It is on the west of the Sahyadri Range and receives a lot of rainfall. The district is rapidly becoming urbanized as 36.91 percent people live in urban areas, compared to 24.22 percent in 2001.
The district is bounded by Thane District towards the north, Mumbai Harbour in the northwest, Ratnagiri District towards the south, Pune district in the east and Arabian Sea in the west. The natural harbour of Mandwa and Pen is included in the district. The northern part of the district forms Navi Mumbai. The largest urban agglomeration in the area in terms of population and spread is Panvel.
Transportation
Raigad is well connected to the island city of Mumbai via the Panvel Sion Expressway. The NH 4 and Pune Mumbai Expressway can be reached through Panvel. The NH 17 traverses through the district after starting in Panvel. The Konkan Railway Line passes through Raigad at Roha and continues on to Veer and Mangaon. The Central Railway Line between Pune and Mumbai goes through Karjat while an extension line connects it to Khopoli. The most important junction of the district is at Panvel which is connected to Mumbai through the Main and Harbour Line, Thane through the Trans Harbour Link, Vasai, Karjat and Roha. All important trains, including the Rajdhani stop here. A narrow gauge railway line between Matheran and Neral exists, known as the Matheran Hill Railway. There are several ports for trading activities in the district- Shrivardhan, Murud, Revas, Mandava and JNPT.
Economy
Raigad is involved with various activities such as education, banking, services, industrial activities, papad making and moulding idols. The agrarian sector of the district depends on Paddy farming during the monsoon. A significant industrial belt exists here where companies such as Reliance, ONGC and HPCL have their petroleum refining factories. The Maha Mumbai Special Economic Zone was promoted by the Reliance Industries in Pen which faced a lot of flak for its exploitative policies. It has been cancelled after repeated agitations. Raigad real estate is soaring as more areas are becoming urbanized. Prices of land parcels are increasing as more developers come up with projects here.
Lifestyle
Raigad has well-developed social infrastructure as it was under the control of the British for some time. They had founded four Anglo-vernacular medium schools and thirty government schools. Currently there are twenty seven secondary Marathi schools, Arts, Science and Commerce Junior and Senior College, a B.Ed College and an MMS College.
Both public and private hospitals and clinic provide healthcare services for those living here. Most of the well-equipped hospitals are located in Panvel such as Gandhi Hospital, Dr. Patil&rsquo;s Hospital and Lifeline Hospital.
Property in Raigad is mostly developing in areas such as Panvel, Kharghar, Khopoli, Alibaug, Pali and Indapur. Prices of Raigad property range from Rs 3900 to 5500 per sq ft depending on the area where the project is coming up. Plots in Pali and Poladpur are priced from Rs 50 to 500 per sq ft.
