Ranchi hit the limelight after it became the capital of the 28th state of India, Jharkhand, post its formation in November 2000. Ranchi is the third largest city of the state, after Jamshedpur and Dhanbad. The city is located 420 kilometres from Kolkata in its east and 125 kilometres from Jamshedpur. Transport

Regular bus services to Kolkata and cities such as Dumka, Varanasi, Hajipur and Patna also ply. Ranchi also has 150 buses under the JNNURM scheme and the JTDC is responsible for operating these buses. Other modes of transportation within the city are the cycle and auto rickshaws. The city had a sudden increase in population after the state of Jharkhand was declared in 2000.
