Ratnagiri: Home to the Karbude Tunnel
Ratnagiri is a part of the Ratnagiri district in the Konkan division of Maharashtra. Located towards the southwest, the city is along the Arabian cost. The Sahyadri Mountains borders the city on its east. Despite being a small city, it has managed to produce several Indian luminaries and statesmen such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dhondo Keshav Karve (educationist and social reformer), and Acharya Vinoba Bhave. The latter three personalities have been awarded the Bharat Ratna award.
Transportation
The National Highway 17 connects Ratnagiri to cities such as Madgaon, Mangalore, Mumbai, Kochi, Udupi, Mumbai and Karwar. The Konkan Railway connects the city to Jaipur and Delhi as well. The Goa Mumbai National Highway is 13 kilometres from here at Hatkhamba. The National Highway 204 connects Ratnagiri to cities such as Nanded, Solapur, Sangli and Kolhapur. Volvo and MSRTC buses plying between Mumbai and Goa halt at Ratnagiri. The closest stops are at Hatkhamba and Sangameshwar. MSRTC buses originating from Ratnagiri ply to Latur, Ambajogai, Panjim and Belgaum.
The Ratnagiri Railway Station is one of the prime railway stations in the Konkan Railway. The station is 6 kilometres from the centre of the city. All trains running under Konkan Railway halt at the Ratnagiri Station. Some of the trains that pass through here are Mumbai Madgaon Konkankanya Express, Mumbai CST Mangalore Junction Superfast Express and Dadar Ratnagiri Passenger.
Around 5 kilometres from the Ratnagiri Railway Station, the Karbude Tunnel is situated which is one of the longest tunnels in Asia at 6608 metres
Economy
Being on the western coast, Ratnagiri receives heavy rainfall which has eroded much of the coastal landscape. However, the fertile alluvial patches in the district produce fruits, cashew nuts, coconuts and rice. The Hapus or Alphonso mangoes are one of the main fruits to be produced here for export. Finishing is also a major industry in Ratnagiri.
Sensing the immense industrial potential of Ratnagiri, the MIDC has founded the Zadgaon and Mirjole industrial estates in Ratnagiri. Companies such as VAV Life Sciences, Verron Industries, Auchtel Chemicals, Gadre Marine Exports, Bharati Shipyard, JK Files and Tools, Finolex Group and Ultratech Cement are based here.
Lifestyle
Despite being a small city, Ratnagiri has well-woven social fabric to support urban lifestyles. Most of the schools are affiliated to CBSE or Maharashtra State Boards. Some of the prominent schools of the city are Maratha Mandir AK Desai High School, Patwardhan High School, Mane&rsquo;s International School and St. Thomas English Medium School. The Department of Fisheries under Maharashtra Government has founded the Marine Biological Research Station in Ratnagiri which includes brackish water fishing farm and mechanized research and fishing vessel. Healthcare facilities in Ratnagiri include both public and private hospitals.
