Solan: The Mushroom City of India
Solan is the biggest municipal council of Himachal Pradesh and is the district headquarters of the Solan district. It is 46 kilometres from Shimla, the state capital. The city is known as the mushroom city of India because of its vast tracts of land being under mushroom cultivation and the Directorate of Mushroom Research being located here. The city is also called the City of Red Gold, for the tomatoes produced in bulk in the city. Solan is located along the Shimla Kalka National Highway 22. The heritage Shimla Kalka narrow gauge railway line passes through here.
Transportation
Solan can be accessed easily via train and roadways. Chandigarh is 68 kilometres away from here and takes two hours to reach via buses. Shimla is 48 kilometres from here and can be reached within an hour. If one takes the railways from Kalka, then there are forty four railway tunnels till Solan. For intercity and interstate transport, the HRTC buses are available from the Solan depot. They ply to cities such as Kangra, Hamirpur, Shimla, Bilaspur and Sirmour. Interstate travels supported by the HRTC include Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh.
To reach Solan by air, one would have to reach the Shimla Airport, 48 kilometres away.
Economy
Solan is considered to be Himachal Pradesh&rsquo;s industrial hub. The Nalagarh is a Pharma hub where quite a few pharmaceutical companies are present. The area is developed due to the special subsidies offered for the area by the central government since 1999. The city is also emerging as an educational hub. A UK based MNC, Xchanging Technology Limited is also located here. They employ close to 200 people and are expected to grow more.
