History:
The history of the city falls back to 812 AD when the early traders settled here. The province was entirely Hindu dominated and was ruled by Hindu kings much till 1297. Vadodara has a very rich historical background as the ardent historians traced its history over 2000 years back. The present Vadodara is definitely a testimony of its most prominent ruler Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III.
The city of Vadodara was once referred as Chandravati after the name of its ruler Raja Chandan, after that Viravati, the place of braves and then Vadpatra due to the presence of several banyan trees and from here the city gained its present name Vadodara.
Geography:
Vadodara is situated in western side of the country at an elevation of 128 feet. The city is 18th largest in the country with a population of 2.1 million people as per the census in 201`1. The city is spread over 235 square kilometers. Located on the fertile plain between the Mahi and Narmada, the city is held as a holy city. It central Gujarat, Vadodara falls on the banks of the river Vishwamitri which divides it into two major regions.

The city of Vadodara is properly administered by the Vadodara Mahanagar Seva Sadan and a few regions at the periphery of the city are governed by Vadodara Urban Development Authority. For effective administration, the city is bifurcated into four major zones and 26 wards.
Vadodara Urban Development Authority is majorly involved in the overall development of Vadodara agglomeration of nearly 714.56 square kilometers whereas Vadodara Mahanagar Seva Sadan is reaponsible for the development of the entire city.
