Varanasi- The City of Ghats
The city of Varanasi does not need an introduction. One of the most ancient cities in India, Varanasi is also known as Banaras or Kashi. It is a sacred city for the Hindus and an important abode for spiritual seekers.
Kashi as it was known in the ancient times was considered a seat of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Varanasi is a pilgrimage spot that attracts both domestic and international visitors and apart from the religious contexts, it is widely famous for its Banarasi Sarees and not to forget, the famous Banarasi Paan. Named after the two rivers flowing through the city, Varuna and Assi, the culture is a thriving one amidst the hullabaloo.
Transportation in the City
For any city, transportation is its lifeline and Varanasi has several modes of it. The city is connected to important northern cities such as Agra, Delhi, Kolkata and Kanpur via the NH2 while the NH29 connects it to cities such as Gorakhpur and Ghazipur. The city is 230 kilometres to the south east of the state capital, Lucknow. The National Highway 56 connects the city to Lucknow through Sultanpur and Jaunpur while the National Highway 7 (India&rsquo;s longest so far), serves as a connection to the southern cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madurai, Salem, Kanyakumari, and Tirunelveli.
The most common modes of transport through the city are cycle and auto rickshaws. Tourist taxis and buses are also available upon request.
The Varanasi Junction or the Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station is the city&rsquo;s biggest railway station. It serves as a stop for 240 trains in a day and has above 3.6 lakh passengers. One can also get off at Mughal Sarai to reach the city as it is only 15 kilometres from here. In 2010, Varanasi was given its own airport which was upgraded to the status of an international one in 2012. With this turn of event the one sector that looked happy was the, Varanasi Real Estate. The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is around 26 kilometres from the centre of the city at Babatpur. Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Jet Airways and Buddha Air operate from the airport and connect it to areas such as Gaya, Delhi, Kolkata, Sharjah, Mumbai and Lucknow.
Economy of the City
The city&rsquo;s economy is mainly dependent on tourism and silk weaving. Most of the Momin Ansari Muslims living here are involved with the art of weaving silk, dyeing and embroidering them. However, the industry faces stiff competition from power looms and cheap Chinese traded silk. For supporting tourism, the city has 12,000 beds available through dharamshalas and inexpensive budget hotel. But with the fact that the Prime Minister of India chose Varanasi as his constituency, property in Varanasi, looks to be a positive investment choice and property rate appreciation is very much on the radar. The city municipal corporation is attempting to better the infrastructure for supporting larger inflows of tourists.
The manufacturing sector is quite prominent in the city where Diesel Locomotive Works is the prime employer. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited which manufactures large scale power equipments has a repairing plant here. Other products that are manufactured here include copperware, rugs, ropes and Mirzapur carpets. The city is also famous for its Khoa, mangoes and betel leaves exports.
Lifestyle in the City
Those living in Varanasi have a lifestyle similar to that in other big cities. Several renowned educational institutions such as IT-BHU and Banaras Hindu University are located here. There are several multiplexes and malls in the vicinity such as IP Vijaya Mall in Bhelupur, IP Mall in Sigra, PDR mall in Luxa and Varanasi Cantonment&rsquo;s JHV Mall. Numerous banks such as State Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and the Canara Bank are located here.
Efforts to carve a Heritage Smart City
After the Prime Minister visited Japan, an agreement was signed between the Mayor of Kyoto and India&rsquo;s Ambassador to Japan for using Japanese technology to create a smart heritage city in Varanasi. An eleven member committee has been formed to modernize waste management, sewage management, urban transport, and water management. This has given the Varanasi property a newer optimistic look with all the proposed future development plans that the government has in store for Varanasi. The vision is to modernize Varanasi while preserving its heritage. Exchanges shall take place between the Banaras Hindu University and Kyoto University for strengthening the ties between the two Buddhist culture centres.
