What is a hostel vs. PG accommodation?

Both hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations offer affordable shared living, but they differ in structure, ownership, legal classification, and the level of services provided.

Paying Guest (PG) Accommodation

  • Typically in a private home or apartment where the owner may also reside.
  • Usually smaller 5 to 30 guests.
  • More personalised meals and housekeeping often included.
  • Governed by a leave and licence or PG agreement.
  • No formal regulation in most states.

Hostel

  • Purpose-built or purpose-converted building for multiple occupants.
  • Can range from 10 to 500+ beds.
  • Self-catering or cafeteria-based food; basic cleaning services.
  • May be operated by educational institutions, corporates, or private operators.
  • Regulated by local municipal bodies (in some cities) and fire safety norms.

The choice between PG and hostel accommodation largely depends on the occupant's preference for privacy, budget, and services. PG arrangements typically offer more personalised care, while hostels offer standardised facilities at scale. Neither type is yet comprehensively regulated in India, making written agreements essential in both cases.
