What is a Light House Project in housing?

A Light House Project (LHP) is an initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Global Housing Technology Challenge India (GHTC-India). Six Light House Projects were launched in January 2021 across six Indian cities, each demonstrating a different innovative, cost-effective, and disaster-resilient construction technology for affordable housing. The LHPs serve as live laboratories for new housing construction methods.

The Six LHP Cities and Technologies

  • Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Precast Concrete System (3D Volumetric) — factory-made modules assembled on site.
  • Rajkot (Gujarat): Monolithic Concrete Construction using Tunnel Formwork — rapid casting of entire floors.
  • Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Precast Concrete System — industrialised construction with precast elements.
  • Ranchi (Jharkhand): Steel Frame with pre-engineered steel structures — fast, durable construction.
  • Agartala (Tripura): Steel Frame with Light Gauge Steel Frame System — suited for hilly terrain.
  • Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): PVC Stay-in-Place Formwork System — lightweight formwork that becomes part of the structure.

Key Objectives of LHPs

  • Technology demonstration: Prove that new construction technologies can deliver quality at scale in India.
  • Speed: New technologies can reduce construction time by 40–60% vs conventional brick-and-mortar.
  • Disaster resilience: Technologies are designed to withstand earthquakes, cyclones, and floods.
  • Cost efficiency: Reduce per-unit construction cost through industrialisation and reduced labour dependency.
  • Replication: Successful technologies from LHPs are to be adopted in mainstream PMAY and other housing projects.

Light House Projects are India's boldest experiment in construction technology innovation for affordable housing. If the technologies demonstrated are successfully scaled, they could reshape how affordable homes are built in India faster, cheaper, and more resilient than ever before.
