What is a parallel kitchen layout?

A parallel kitchen layout, also called a galley kitchen, features two parallel runs of cabinets and countertops facing each other with a walkway in between. It is a highly efficient layout that maximises counter and storage space in a narrow or rectangular kitchen.

How a Parallel Kitchen Works

  • One side typically houses: Refrigerator, storage cabinets, and preparation area
  • The other side houses: Cooking hob, chimney, sink, and upper cabinets
  • The walkway between the two rows should be at least 3–4 feet wide
  • Can be closed at one or both ends, or open on both ends

Benefits of a Parallel Kitchen

  • Excellent counter space on both sides
  • Highly efficient for a single cook everything within arm's reach
  • Maximises storage in narrow or long kitchen spaces
  • Easy to keep clean and organised
  • Often more affordable than L or U layouts due to simpler configuration

The parallel kitchen layout is an excellent choice for rectangular kitchens with limited width but adequate length. Its efficiency and ample counter space make it a favourite in Indian 2BHK and 3BHK flats where kitchens tend to be narrow and elongated.
