What is a relocation survey?

A relocation survey is a physical or virtual inspection conducted by a representative of a packers and movers company at your home or office before the move. Its purpose is to assess the volume, type, and weight of goods to be shifted so the company can provide an accurate, itemised price quotation. It is also called a pre-move survey or home survey and is considered the gold standard for getting a precise relocation estimate.

Types of Relocation Surveys

  • In-Home Physical Survey: A company representative visits your premises in person to inspect all items room by room.
  • Virtual/Video Survey: The customer takes a live video walk-through of their home via a video call, allowing the surveyor to assess remotely.
  • Self-Survey Form: The customer fills out a detailed online form listing furniture and appliances — less accurate but quicker.
  • Telephonic Survey: Basic information gathered over a phone call provides only rough estimates.

What Happens During a Relocation Survey?

  • The surveyor walks through each room and notes all items to be moved.
  • Special items like antiques, pianos, artwork, or gym equipment are highlighted.
  • The surveyor assesses packing requirements and materials needed.
  • They calculate the approximate truck load or volume in cubic feet.
  • Notes are made about access challenges narrow staircases, no elevator, long carry distances.
  • A detailed inventory list is prepared and shared with you.

A relocation survey is the foundation of a well-planned and fairly priced move. Always insist on a pre-move survey especially for large households or long-distance relocations to ensure there are no surprises in the final bill or on moving day.
