What is micro-hydro power for buildings?

Micro-hydro power is a small-scale hydroelectric system that generates electricity from the flow of water such as streams, rivers, or water supply pipes near or within a building or estate.

How Micro-Hydro Systems Work

Water flows through a turbine or runner connected to a generator. The energy output depends on the head (vertical drop of water) and the flow rate. Even modest streams with sufficient drop and flow can generate kilowatts of continuous power through a well-designed micro-hydro setup.

Scale Classification

  • Micro-hydro: Up to 100 kW suitable for individual buildings, small communities, or estates
  • Pico-hydro: Up to 5 kW suitable for a single home or small facility
  • Mini-hydro: 100 kW to 1 MW suitable for small villages or industrial facilities

Micro-hydro power is an underutilised but highly efficient renewable energy option for buildings in water-rich hilly regions of India.
