What is the difference between vitrified and ceramic tiles?

Vitrified and ceramic tiles are both popular flooring and wall tile options in Indian homes, but they differ significantly in composition, durability, porosity, and cost. Vitrified tiles are denser, harder, and less porous, making them the preferred choice for flooring, while ceramic tiles are more affordable and widely used for wall applications.

Ceramic Tiles

  • Made from clay mixed with minerals and fired at lower temperatures
  • More porous absorbs water more easily, needs proper sealing
  • Lighter and easier to cut suitable for wall tiling
  • Available in a wide range of colours and designs
  • Less durable than vitrified can chip or crack under heavy use
  • More affordable: ₹30–₹80 per sq. ft.
  • Best for: Bathroom walls, kitchen backsplash, low-traffic areas

Vitrified Tiles

  • Made from silica and feldspar in addition to clay, fired at very high temperatures
  • Very low porosity (less than 0.5%) highly resistant to stains and moisture
  • Denser, harder, and more durable than ceramic
  • Smooth, glossy, or matte finishes mimic marble, wood, or concrete
  • Higher cost: ₹60–₹200+ per sq. ft. depending on brand and size
  • Best for: Living rooms, bedrooms, and high-traffic floors

For flooring in Indian homes, vitrified tiles are the clear winner for durability, ease of maintenance, and aesthetics. Ceramic tiles remain a cost-effective option for wall cladding, especially in bathrooms and kitchens where floor-level durability is not required.
