What is Z-Wave protocol?

Z-Wave is a wireless communication protocol specifically designed for home automation. It operates on the 908.42 MHz frequency (sub-GHz band), which means it doesn't interfere with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and offers excellent range and wall-penetration for smart home devices.

How Z-Wave Works

Like Zigbee, Z-Wave uses a mesh network topology. A Z-Wave controller (hub) manages up to 232 devices. Each device relays signals, so the further you go, the more reliable the network becomes with more devices added.

Z-Wave vs Zigbee

  • Frequency: Z-Wave (sub-GHz) vs Zigbee (2.4 GHz — same as Wi-Fi).
  • Interference: Z-Wave has less Wi-Fi interference.
  • Device Limit: Z-Wave supports up to 232 devices; Zigbee supports 65,000+.
  • Ecosystem: Z-Wave is more common in security systems; Zigbee in lighting.
  • Certification: Z-Wave has stricter certification, ensuring better compatibility.

Z-Wave is a reliable and interference-free protocol best suited for security and lock-based automation systems. It is popular in North America and Europe, with growing availability in premium Indian smart homes.
