India’s biometric-based airport travel platform Digi Yatra has crossed the milestone of 10 crore passenger journeys, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The platform has also recorded more than 2.4 crore downloads across Android and iOS devices.
Digi Yatra currently operates at 38 airports across the country and uses facial recognition technology to enable paperless and contactless passenger processing at airport entry and boarding points.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced that Digi Yatra will be expanded to 27 more airports by next year. The upcoming rollout will include major greenfield airport projects such as Navi Mumbai, Jewar, and Bhogapuram.
The expansion is part of the government's broader effort to strengthen digital infrastructure within India's aviation sector as passenger traffic continues to grow.
According to the ministry, Digi Yatra has significantly reduced the time required for passenger verification at airport entry points. By replacing manual document checks, average processing time has reportedly reduced from around 15 seconds to 5 seconds per passenger.
The system is designed to improve passenger movement, reduce congestion, and support smoother operations at airport terminals.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that the milestone comes at a time when domestic passenger traffic has increased substantially. The ministry noted that daily domestic air passenger traffic, which averaged below two lakh passengers in 2014, has crossed the five-lakh mark on multiple occasions over the past three years.
The platform currently supports 11 languages. According to the ministry, plans are underway to add another 11 regional languages by the end of the year.
The expansion is aimed at improving accessibility and enabling wider adoption among passengers across different regions of the country.
The ministry stated that Digi Yatra follows a device-based data storage model. Passenger information remains encrypted on users’ smartphones and is shared only with departure airports for temporary identity verification purposes.
The platform continues to be positioned as a key digital initiative within India's evolving aviation ecosystem.
