Nimtala Ghat has long stood as one of Calcutta’s most sacred and historic spaces—a place where tradition, spirituality, and the flow of the Hooghly interlace. Now, this heritage ghat is poised for transformation, thanks to a visionary partnership between Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) and the city’s leading real estate innovator, PS Group. The signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding marks the start of Nimtala Ghat’s journey from storied past to a vibrant, beautifully restored riverfront icon.
Project leaders have set out a roadmap to repair the ghat’s enduring steps, restore its pathways, introduce tasteful landscaping, and illuminate the riverbank with modern lighting. This is no ordinary renovation—a renowned French design firm has been commissioned to honor the spirit of Nimtala while infusing world-class aesthetics.
“The idea is to build a world-class structure along the Hooghly,” shared Saurav Dugar, Director of PS Group Realty, echoing the project’s grand ambitions. Read more on PS Group’s heritage projects.
Nimtala Ghat is much more than a stretch of riverbank—it’s where thousands converge for Durga idol immersion every Puja and serves as a touchstone for Calcutta’s spiritual life. Adjacent to the solemn burning ghat, its renovation will blend reverence with renewal.
Rathendra Raman, chairman of SMP, described the initiative as one that will “not only enhance the city’s riverfront aesthetics but also the civic pride.”
The Calcutta port authority is supporting PS Group by offering free access to critical utilities like water, electricity, and site security throughout construction—a gesture underscoring the project’s collaborative spirit.
Work is slated to begin after the monsoon, with a six-month completion target. By this time next year, Nimtala could stand as a benchmark for how historic city spaces can be respectfully revived.
