Construction of terminal building and runway at Patahi Airport in Bihar

Construction work at Bihar's Patahi Airport has gathered pace. Work on the terminal building, boundary wall, and runway recarpeting is progressing simultaneously.

The project aims to restart air services from Muzaffarpur with small aircraft under the Centre's regional connectivity programme, UDAN.

Civil aviation secretary Nilesh Ramchandra Deore said work started in July. It has a 10-month completion deadline, though efforts are being made to finish earlier.

He noted this was achieved at Purnea Airport, where work was completed in a record four months, setting a benchmark the department hopes to match at Patahi.

Construction Progress

A construction agency from Kanpur has started piling work and construction of pillars for the terminal building.

Sand and gravel have been stocked at the site. Roofing material for the prefabricated steel-structure terminal has been ordered from Sasaram.

Runway recarpeting has also started. The existing runway is 1,300 metres long.

It is being upgraded along with the Runway End Safety Area to meet Code 2B standards. The old brick-paved surface is being replaced with a proper runway of asphalt and concrete.

Airport Scale and Survey Findings

A recent Airports Authority of India survey found that a runway of around 1,300 metres would be sufficient for operating 19-seater aircraft. The airport complex currently has around 106 acres of land.

What's Being Built

The development includes a modern prefabricated steel terminal building, taxiway, parking bays, apron, ATC tower, operations building, fire station, and other facilities. An aviation training centre is also planned.

  • Terminal and associated buildings
  • Airside infrastructure, including runway, taxiway, and apron
  • Combined work orders worth nearly Rs 59 crore

The terminal is being developed to provide passenger facilities for small-aircraft operations. The airside work covers the runway, taxiway, apron, and related facilities.

Security and Background

The construction area has been cordoned off, and entry of outsiders has been restricted. Local police stations have been assigned responsibility for security and to ensure construction work is not disrupted.

Patahi Airport is being developed under the Centre's UDAN scheme to improve regional air connectivity.

The airport had earlier handled flights to Patna, but commercial air services were discontinued decades ago.

The ongoing development is expected to allow smaller aircraft to operate from Muzaffarpur once the required infrastructure is completed, reviving a connection that had remained dormant for years.
