The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially inaugurated the 13.3-km-long "Missing Link" project on the Yashwantrao Chavan (Mumbai-Pune) Expressway. Termed an "engineering marvel" by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the project was launched on May 1, 2026, during Maharashtra Day celebrations. The initiative aims to bypass the treacherous Bhor Ghat (Khandala) section, a steep and accident-prone mountain pass that has long been a bottleneck for traffic between Mumbai and Pune.

• Structural Components: The total 13.3-km stretch is composed of two twin tunnels, two massive viaducts, and the central cable-stayed bridge.

Economic and Safety Impact

According to government estimates, the Missing Link will serve as an "economic multiplier," projected to help generate an economy worth ₹70,000 crore by enhancing industrial connectivity and attracting new investments along the corridor. Beyond economic benefits, the primary focus remains road safety. By bypassing the winding ghat section, the new route eliminates frequent traffic congestion and significantly reduces travel distance and time for commuters. Fadnavis noted that while the project was conceptualized in 2010, it faced several delays due to environmental concerns before its successful completion.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Khalapur end of the expressway in Raigad district, followed by a ceremonial drive on the Lonavala-bound carriageway by CM Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. However, the event was marked by a massive traffic jam in the existing ghat section, leading many commuters to question the timing of the function during a long weekend. Fadnavis issued a formal apology for the inconvenience, reiterating that the project's completion was a "dream come true" and should be viewed more as a "Connecting Link" rather than a missing one.
