Guwahati - The Gateway to the North East
Lodged between the foothills of Shillong and the banks of Brahmaputra, Guwahati is the capital and also the largest city of Assam. It is also one of the 8 Sisters of North East India. Guwahati is where you start your journey to the mystical and captivating world of the beautiful north eastern states of India.
The city is governed by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation while the development and planning of the city is handled by Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority. The city is an educational and commercial hub of northeast India. It is also the city where north eastern Indians have to make a pit stop to further travel into the central, northern, southern and eastern regions in India, creating a converging point to all the various cultures of the 8 sisters of the North East. There are premier institutes such as Gauhati University, Indian Institute of Technology and the distinguished Cotton College.
Thanks to the improvement in the city&rsquo;s economy, the Guwahati Real Estate sector in the city is finally creating a niche in the market. There are several upcoming Guwahati properties in Dispur, Rehabari and Beltola.
Transportation
Guwahati is served by the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport which is 20 kilometres towards the west of Guwahati in Borjhar. The city is connected to various parts the country such as Jaipur, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. International flights to Paro and Bangkok are operated from here by Druk Air. Daily flights which seat 18 and 9 passengers have started to Dimapur, Tezpur and Silchar.
The North East Frontier Railway Zone is hosted by Guwahati, with major stations at Kamakhya and Guwahati Junctions. Trains such as Guwahati Rajdhani Expressway, Saraighat Express, Guwahati Bangalore Express, Guwahati Ernakulam Express and Kanchanjunga Express operate from here.
The roadways of Guwahati are quite extensive as they connect to eastern states of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. The NH 31 connects Guwahati to the eastern states while the NH37 goes to Dimapur in Nagaland. Bus services in Guwahati are well developed as there are three nodal points- Paltan Bazaar, Adabari and the ISBT Guwahati. ASTC operates several buses through here. Interstate and international bus services to Imphal in Manipur, Bangladesh and Bhutan operate from here. Rickshaws, autos, radio taxis and contract taxis which as MUVs operate in the area.
Being along the banks of the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati is served by the National Waterways No. 2. It has several ferry services available for movement of cargo. Passenger vessels also operate on the river.
Economy
Guwahati is an administrative centre of Assam and is a trading centre thanks to its location by the side of the Brahmaputra. The city is a gateway to India&rsquo;s northeast. It serves as a wholesale distribution centre and marketing hub. The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre is one of the busiest and biggest tea trading centres of the world. Mostly Assam Tea is traded here. The petroleum refinery of the IOCL at Noonmati is a big employment zone. Industrial estates of Guwahati are located in Kalapahar and Bamunimaidam. Quite a few publishing houses and print media offices are located here. The city is also home to the Guwahati Stock Exchange. Recreation and tourism, research, education, real estate and cultural activities are some of the other contributors to the city&rsquo;s economic growth.
Lifestyle
The city is home to numerous reputed northeast universities such as the Gauhati University, founded in 1948 at Jalukbari. The Cotton College is also one of the heritage educational institutions established here. Some of the reputed educational institutes in the city include Handique Girls College, B Borooah College, Arya Vidyapeeth College and JB Law College etc. A campus of TISS was founded here in the year 2010 while the IIT was established in 1994 and ranks among the top 10 engineering institutes of India.
Healthcare facilities in the city include Dispur Hospital, Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, International Hospital and Hayat Hospital. Guwahati has its own medical colleges such as Gauhati Medical College and Hospital where good treatment is imparted to patients.
Being an urban conglomeration, Guwahati has several retail stores such as Pantaloons, Westside, Wills Lifestyle, Big Bazaar, Mochi, Skipper and Van Heusen are there to serve the locals. Several cinemas are there in the city at Paltan Bazaar such as Gold Cinemas, Anuradha Cineplex and Fun Cinemas. Malls in Guwahati include Dihang Arcade and Fort Mall.
The prices of property in Guwahati range from Rs 2900 to 3200 per sq. ft. Therefore, for a 3 BHK in Dharapur in Guwahati, one would have to spend anything between 35 and 39 lakh. Depending on the project and location, per square foot rate varies. For instance, a 2 BHK in Rehabari will cost you around 59 to 61 lakh.
