Bengaluru’s Civic Body Achieves Record-Breaking Revenue Milestone
Bengaluru’s civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has reported a remarkable surge in property tax collections, amassing ₹2,881 crore in the first three months of the new financial year. This achievement represents 45.25% of its ambitious ₹6,256-crore annual target, setting a new benchmark for municipal revenue generation.
The BBMP’s East Zone joined Mahadevapura in the prestigious ₹1,000-crore club, generating the highest property tax revenue among all city zones. Meanwhile, the South and Yelahanka zones also performed impressively, each surpassing 47% of their annual collection targets, highlighting the city’s widespread compliance and robust tax base.
This surge in revenue can be attributed to significant improvements in the BBMP’s tax collection system and the introduction of the new garbage tax, which has increased annual property tax bills by up to 35%. Property tax remains the single largest contributor to the BBMP’s exchequer, ensuring the city’s infrastructure and civic services are well-funded.
For context, the BBMP had collected ₹1,696 crore in the same period last year, making this year’s performance a substantial leap forward. The civic body’s proactive measures and policy changes are clearly paying dividends, positioning Bengaluru as a model for urban fiscal management.
