Imagine a city where homeowners no longer need to stand in long queues at civic offices just to clear their property tax bills. In 2025, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made that vision a reality. With the launch of a simplified digital platform, residents can now pay property tax online within minutes—fast, secure, and completely transparent.
Before payment comes assessment. According to recent GCC circulars, citizens can initiate the property tax assessment either online or offline. The online process begins at chennaicorporation.gov.in, where homeowners first create a unique login using their mobile number, email ID, or name. Once registered, property details such as division, name of assessee, location, street name, door number, and contact number are submitted for verification.
Supporting documents, including registered property papers, the completed application form, and the latest tax receipt (if the property is newly built or reconstructed), must also be uploaded or submitted in hard copy. For those who prefer offline assistance, requests can be filed at TACTV (Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation) counters located within GCC premises or at zonal offices. After submission, homeowners receive an SMS acknowledgement confirming that their application has been recorded.
Paying your property tax online is now simpler than ever. Homeowners can log in to the official Tamil Nadu Urban E-Services portal at tnurbanepay.tn.gov.in, select "Greater Chennai Corporation" from the dropdown menu, and enter details such as property ID, zone, or ward number from previous receipts.
This digital receipt can be downloaded and stored for records, eliminating the need for frequent visits to zonal offices.
Yes, homeowners can apply for property tax modifications both online and offline. Similar to assessment, the process starts at chennaicorporation.gov.in. Applicants must log in, fill in property details, and submit registered property documents, an application form, and previous tax receipts (if applicable).
After submission, the request is reviewed by a tax assessor, who inspects the property and forwards the report to the concerned officer. Following committee review, the application may be approved or returned for corrections. Once approved, a fresh assessment order (Notice 6) is issued, and the owner is notified through SMS.
For appeals against assessments, residents can follow the same submission process online, at TACTV counters, or through zonal offices with all necessary documents.
With these updates, Chennai’s property tax system is evolving into a citizen-friendly, transparent, and fully digitised framework—one step closer to smart governance.
