IKEA India has announced plans to expand its footprint to 30 stores across the country by 2030, with a strategy centred on transit-linked locations and multiple store formats.
According to IKEA India CEO Patrik Antoni, the retailer wants to establish stores in locations "where not everybody has to drive," making them more accessible through metro systems, public transport and high-density urban centres.
The expansion reflects IKEA's long-term commitment to the Indian market while adapting its global retail model to local mobility patterns.
The company plans to combine large-format destination stores with medium-sized outlets and compact city stores to reach a wider customer base.
This flexible approach will allow IKEA to expand into densely populated urban areas where land availability is limited while improving convenience for shoppers.
IKEA's future expansion will prioritise locations well connected by public transport rather than relying solely on car-dependent suburban developments.
The retailer believes transit-oriented stores can attract more visitors while reducing travel barriers for customers living in major metropolitan areas. Existing stores have already benefited from improved metro connectivity, supporting the company's focus on accessible retail destinations.
The strategy also aligns with changing consumer preferences in India's large cities, where growing metro networks and mixed-use developments are reshaping retail location decisions.
Smaller urban formats will complement IKEA's traditional warehouse-style stores by serving customers closer to where they live and work.

To support nationwide expansion, IKEA will continue developing a combination of large flagship stores, city stores and planning studios.
This multi-format strategy is designed to increase market coverage while providing customers with greater flexibility in shopping, planning and order fulfilment.
The retailer expects different store sizes to play complementary roles as it expands into new cities across India.
The expansion also reflects IKEA's broader investment in India's organised retail sector, where rising urbanisation, improving infrastructure and increasing consumer spending continue to create growth opportunities.

With a target of operating 30 stores by 2030, IKEA is accelerating its long-term growth strategy in India through improved accessibility, diversified store formats and transit-oriented locations.
The approach is expected to strengthen the retailer's presence across major cities while making its products and services more accessible to a larger customer base.
