India and the United States have advanced discussions on civil and commercial space cooperation following the ninth meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG).
The meeting was hosted by India on August 5 and 6, 2026, at the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in civil and commercial space activities and pursuing future partnerships in space science and human spaceflight technologies.
The meeting also built on cooperation under the US-India Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology (TRUST) Initiative.
NASA Invites ISRO to Join Moon Base Programme
One of the key developments from the meeting was NASA's invitation to ISRO to join its Moon Base programme. The invitation builds on the broader India-US partnership under the Artemis Accords.
The two countries also agreed to advance discussions on cooperation involving open scientific data sharing under the Artemis Accords.
The initiative adds a new area of potential collaboration as both countries explore opportunities for future lunar and space science activities.
NISAR Mission Provides Foundation for Further Cooperation
The discussions also reviewed opportunities to expand cooperation following the successful launch of the joint NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission in 2025.
The mission represents a major collaborative effort between the two countries in Earth observation.
Building on that cooperation, India and the US discussed pursuing future science and human spaceflight technology partnerships.
The latest CSJWG meeting therefore extends the relationship beyond existing joint programmes towards additional areas of civil space activity.
Senior Officials Lead Bilateral Discussions
ISRO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Space Dr. V. Narayanan and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor addressed the opening segment of the meeting.
They highlighted the importance of further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the space sector.
The meeting was co-chaired on the Indian side by M. Sankaran, Director of the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre, ISRO. The US side was represented by Dr.
Wesley Brooks, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, and Kathleen Karika, NASA Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations.
Focus Also Extends to Sustainable Space Activities
India and the US reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the guidelines of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) concerning the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
The two sides also reviewed ongoing multilateral efforts related to the effectiveness of COPUOS. The discussions place the bilateral space relationship within a wider framework of international cooperation on sustainable and peaceful activities in outer space.
The ninth CSJWG meeting marks another step in the India-US civil and commercial space relationship, with discussions now covering future science, human spaceflight, lunar cooperation, open scientific data and the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
