Kolkata Metro to Begin 6 AM Services From July 27

Commuters on Kolkata Metro's Blue and Green corridors will be able to start their journeys earlier from July 27, with Metro Railway introducing 6am services on both routes on an experimental basis. The move also includes an increase in the number of daily trains and extended operating hours to improve connectivity and reduce waiting time, particularly during peak periods.

For commuters who rely on these two corridors for their daily commute, the change effectively adds nearly an hour of usable service time at both ends of the day.

How the Schedule Changes

Under the revised schedule, the first trains on both lines will depart at 6am from Monday to Saturday, replacing the existing start times of 6.50am on the Blue Line and 6.39am on the Green Line. The last trains on both corridors will now leave at 10.30pm, extending services beyond the current closing timings. This shift means passengers on both routes will now have a consistent 6am start, removing the slight timing gap that previously existed between the two lines.

• New start time: 6am, Monday to Saturday (both lines)
• New closing time: 10.30pm (both lines)
• Blue Line weekday services: 272, up from 260
• Green Line weekday services: 236, up from 228
• Blue Line Saturday services: 258
• Green Line Saturday services: 212
• Sunday services: still begin at 9am, run until 10.30pm with a slight increase

More Trains Across the Week, on a Trial Basis

The Blue Line will operate 272 services on weekdays, up from 260, while the Green Line will run 236 services instead of 228. Saturday services have also been increased to 258 on the Blue Line and 212 on the Green Line. On Sundays, trains will continue to begin at 9am, but operations will now continue until 10.30pm, with a slight increase in the number of services.

Metro Railway said the revised timetable is being introduced on a trial basis and will be reviewed before a decision is taken on whether to make the changes permanent, suggesting the authority wants to first assess ridership during the newly added slots before committing long-term.

Which Routes Benefit

The Blue Line, the country's first metro link, runs between Garia in south Kolkata and Dakshineswar in the city's northern fringes. The Green Line connects Howrah Maidan in the west to Salt Lake Sector V, the IT hub of eastern India. As two of the network's most heavily used corridors, any change to their timings is likely to have an outsized impact on the city's daily commuter flow compared with adjustments to less-travelled lines.
