The Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved Metro Line 13. It is a 25-km-long corridor with 16 stations.
The line will connect Mira-Bhayandar with Vasai-Virar on Mumbai's outskirts.
The estimated cost is Rs 17,724.99 crore, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee. Fadnavis chaired the meeting at Mantralaya, the state secretariat, in south Mumbai.
The 25.03-km line will pass through Thane and Palghar districts. It will be implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), an official release said.
A 25 km corridor connecting Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar
Of the total route, 21.78 km will be elevated. The remaining 3.25 km will run underground. The corridor will have 16 stations in total, 13 elevated and three underground.
- A 4.92-km integrated six-lane road-and-metro bridge over Vasai Creek, connecting Panju island
- A metro depot proposed at Chikhal Dongari in Palghar district
- Connections at Mira Road, Vasai, Nalasopara, Naigaon and Virar
- Links to suburban railway stations at Naigaon, Nalasopara and Virar
- A proposed interchange with Metro Line 9 at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ground in Mira Bhayandar
Bus services are also planned at all metro stations.
Expected impact and timeline
About 24.84 hectares of land will be required for the project. It is targeted for completion within five years of approval.
Fadnavis directed authorities to complete land acquisition and access roads within the next six months.
Once completed, the line is expected to carry around 4.49 lakh passengers daily by 2031.
The project is expected to cut travel time by about 50 per cent compared with road travel. It should also reduce dependence on private vehicles and traffic density on major highways, while lowering carbon emissions, the release said.
Fadnavis said the line will also strengthen links with industrial and logistics centres.

Pune Ring Road's eastern expansion also approved
The same committee gave administrative approval to a revised project cost for the eastern expansion of the Pune Ring Road.
The revised cost is Rs 10,502.36 crore. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will implement the project.
The expansion covers a 31.805-km access-controlled expressway. It runs from Sortapwadi on the Pune-Solapur road to Varve-Shivare on the Pune-Satara road.
The ring road aims to divert inter-state and inter-city traffic outside Pune, reducing congestion within the city. The full ring road project is 168.981 km long.
About 80 per cent of land acquisition has been completed, with completion targeted by June 2029. The road will have three lanes in each direction, with a speed limit of 120 kmph.
It will include one interchange, several bridges, 18 viaducts or flyovers, and four tunnels.
