Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro) has proposed a 58-km metro rail network for Nashik city at an estimated cost of Rs 14,520 crore in the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) prepared for the city.
The proposed mass transit system has been planned in two phases to cater to Nashik's growing transportation needs over the next two decades.
According to the draft CMP, three corridors have been identified as having potential for a Light Metro system, though a final decision will be taken after completion of statutory procedures, stakeholder consultations and detailed feasibility assessments.
Phase I: two corridors spanning 35 km by 2036
Under Phase I, two metro corridors have been proposed:
- A 21.5-km route connecting Gangapur village and Nashik Road, proposed for implementation by 2031
- A 13.58-km corridor between Mumbai Naka and Pathardi Phata, targeted for completion by 2036
Together, the two corridors span around 35 km and are estimated to cost around Rs 8,770 crore.

Phase II: Ambad-Airport corridor targeted for 2046
In Phase II, Maha Metro has proposed a 23-km corridor linking Ambad with Nashik Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 5,750 crore, envisaged for implementation by 2046.
According to Maha Metro estimates, the two Phase I corridors are expected to handle peak-hour passenger traffic of nearly 11,000 commuters per hour on each route, indicating sufficient ridership potential for a mass transit system such as Light Metro.
Maha Metro recently presented the draft CMP to various stakeholders and invited suggestions on the proposed mobility roadmap.
Officials said the plan is being revised based on the feedback received, with the final CMP expected to be submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in September for approval.
A senior Maha Metro official told TOI that the proposed corridors have shown strong potential for a Light Metro system, subject to finalisation of the CMP and incorporation of additional data, including updated population and travel demand projections.

From Neo Metro to Light Metro: the project's back story
In April 2025, during a review meeting on the Kumbh Mela, Tarun Kapoor, adviser to the Prime Minister, had instructed officials to explore alternative public transport systems adopted in global cities, instead of proceeding with the earlier Neo Metro model.
Following this, Maha Metro initiated a new mobility survey to reassess the city's requirements.
The Centre had earlier announced the Neo Metro project for Nashik in the Union Budget for 2021-22, allocating Rs 2,092 crore, but the project was later dropped, prompting concerns about the future of a mass transit system for the fast-growing city.
