MHADA Transforms PMGP Colony

A Long-Awaited Transformation Begins

In a significant move to address the long-standing housing challenges faced by residents, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has initiated the tender process for the redevelopment of PMGP Colony in Poonam Nagar, Jogeshwari—a western suburb of Mumbai. This ambitious project marks a turning point for nearly 1,000 families who have endured years of living in cramped, dilapidated conditions.

From Legacy to Renewal: The Story of PMGP Colony

Originally constructed between 1990 and 1992 under the Prime Minister’s Grant Project (PMGP), the colony comprises 17 ground-plus-four-storey buildings spread across 27,625 sq. m. For decades, residents have lived in 180 sq. ft. matchbox homes, enduring crumbling infrastructure and broken amenities. Their plight, often highlighted on social media, has finally caught the attention of authorities, paving the way for a much-needed transformation.

A Promise of Modern Comforts

Under MHADA’s redevelopment plan, residents will be rehabilitated into modern homes with a carpet area of 450 sq. ft.—more than double the size of their current dwellings. The project, to be executed directly by MHADA through the appointment of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor, aims to complete the redevelopment within three and a half years. This initiative not only promises improved living conditions but also a renewed sense of dignity and hope for the community.

A Journey Marked by Persistence and Progress

The road to redevelopment has been long and fraught with challenges. In 2010, housing societies within the colony appointed a private developer, but years of inaction left residents in limbo. Frustrated by the delay, residents petitioned the government, leading to the cancellation of the developer’s contract in December 2020. Subsequent tenders in 2024 failed to attract bids, prompting MHADA to propose direct execution of the project. With government approval secured in May 2025, the tender process was officially launched on June 16, 2025, and bids are due by July 7, 2025.

Building a Brighter Future Together

As MHADA takes the lead, the project stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and institutional commitment. The redevelopment of PMGP Colony is more than just a construction project—it is a pledge to restore faith, uplift lives, and set a new standard for affordable housing in Mumbai.
