In a defining move for Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has acquired 174 hectares of land in Mogharpada, Thane, to establish the city’s largest integrated metro depot. This sprawling facility is set to become the nerve center for operations and maintenance of four crucial Metro lines—4, 4A, 10, and 11—spanning nearly 56 kilometers from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Mira Road. The land transfer, formalized on an ‘as-is-where-is’ basis per the Government Resolution of October 16, 2023, marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s journey toward seamless, reliable, and future-ready public transport.
Strategically located at Mogharpada, the depot is envisioned as a critical command and maintenance hub. It will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including train stabling during non-operational hours, heavy overhauls, routine maintenance, lifting and equipment replacement, and comprehensive safety testing. This unified approach, recommended by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, ensures optimized integration and efficiency across all four lines. With the depot’s construction now underway, Mumbai is poised to experience a quantum leap in connectivity, reducing travel time and enhancing the daily commute for millions.
The Mogharpada depot is more than just a transit hub—it is a catalyst for broader urban and economic transformation. Thane, already a thriving satellite city, is home to expansive real estate townships developed by industry leaders such as the Hiranandani Group, Oberoi Realty, and Raymond Realty. The depot’s development is expected to further boost the region’s appeal, with apartment prices in Grade A projects currently ranging between ₹15,000 and ₹30,000 per sq ft. Recent high-profile land transactions, including a 6.28-acre purchase by Arkade Developers for ₹172 crore and a seven-acre acquisition by KL Rahul and Suniel Shetty, underscore the area’s growing prominence as a real estate destination.
As construction begins, the Mogharpada depot embodies the aspirations of a new Mumbai—one that is connected, resilient, and ready for the future. By centralizing operations and maintenance, the depot will ensure reliable, round-the-clock service for some of the city’s busiest and fastest-growing corridors. This landmark project not only accelerates Mumbai’s transition to sustainable, multimodal transport but also sets the stage for continued urban expansion and prosperity in Thane and beyond.
