Odisha’s Industrial Renaissance: A Journey Toward Prosperity and Progress

A Historic Leap for Odisha

In a landmark decision that signals a new era of industrial growth, the Odisha government has approved eight mega projects worth over ₹1.51 lakh crore, setting the stage for transformative development across the state. This visionary initiative, greenlit during a High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, is poised to generate more than 62,000 job opportunities, reinforcing Odisha’s ambition to emerge as a leading industrial and investment hub in India.

A Vision for Viksit Bharat and Samruddha Odisha

The projects span the aluminium, chemicals, steel, textiles, and ancillary and downstream metal sectors, with investments strategically distributed across six districts—Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Khurda, and Sambalpur. This sweeping industrial push is a resolute step toward the national goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and the state’s own vision of Samruddha Odisha by 2036. With Odisha set to celebrate its centenary in 2036, the government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth has never been stronger.

Engineering the Future: Major Projects and Milestones

At the heart of this industrial renaissance is Vedanta Limited’s colossal investment of ₹1,28,000 crore to establish a 3 MTPA aluminium smelter and a 4,900 MW captive power plant in Dhenkanal—a project expected to create 30,000 jobs. The chemicals sector is set for a significant boost with SRF Limited’s ₹10,000 crore specialty chemicals and refrigerant manufacturing unit in Ganjam, promising 20,000 employment opportunities.

The steel and metal downstream sector is equally vibrant, with Jindal India Steel Tech Limited investing ₹3,600 crore in a specialty steel processing facility in Dhenkanal, generating 2,000 jobs. Shyam Steel Manufacturing Limited’s proposed integrated steel plant in Keonjhar, at an investment of ₹2,490 crore, will employ 2,370 people. Linde India Limited’s air separation unit in Jajpur, valued at ₹1,303.50 crore, will support high-quality industrial gas supply and create 100 jobs.

Ancillary metal sector projects include Star Metal Works Private Limited’s ₹2,291 crore investment in Sambalpur for a narrow hot strip mill, cold rolling, and plate cum Steckle mill, offering 250 jobs. Supreme Metals Export Private Limited’s rolling mill for TMT bars and wire rods in Keonjhar, worth ₹1,500 crore, will generate 680 jobs. In textiles, Sportking India Limited’s ₹2,055 crore cotton and blended yarn manufacturing unit in Khurda is set to create 4,800 jobs.

A Legacy of Progress and Promise

Since June 12 last year, the Odisha government has held six HLCA meetings, approving a total of 62 projects with an investment opportunity of ₹5.67 lakh crore and the potential to create about 2.42 lakh jobs. This remarkable progress underscores Odisha’s unwavering commitment to economic growth, job creation, and regional development.

Building a Brighter Tomorrow

As Odisha strides confidently into its next chapter, these projects stand as beacons of hope and opportunity. They promise to uplift communities, drive innovation, and position the state as a powerhouse of industrial excellence. With a clear vision and robust execution, Odisha is not just building industries—it is shaping futures, one project at a time.
