West Bengal has completed a large-scale survey covering more than 54.6 lakh households under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), marking an important step towards identifying eligible beneficiaries for rural housing assistance.
The state's Panchayats and Rural Development department completed the survey by the August 31 deadline.
The exercise was aimed at assessing housing needs and identifying households that could qualify for support under the rural housing programme.
The state had initially projected a minimum survey requirement of approximately 44.4 lakh households.
The final coverage of more than 54.6 lakh households represents a 123% achievement against the projected minimum, according to state officials.
The survey included both field-based assessments and a new self-survey facility that allowed eligible residents to apply through their smartphones without visiting government offices.
Nearly 7 lakh applications were received through the self-survey process, expanding access to the beneficiary identification exercise.
South 24 Parganas recorded the highest number of surveyed households, with more than 4.81 lakh households covered.
Murshidabad followed with approximately 4.42 lakh households, while North 24 Parganas ranked third with around 3.84 lakh households.
The wide coverage provides the state government with a larger database for assessing rural housing requirements and identifying eligible families.

Completion of the survey does not immediately mean that every surveyed household will receive housing assistance.
Officials will first conduct detailed scrutiny of the survey data and self-survey applications. The final beneficiary list will be prepared after the verification process.
Funds will then be released to approved beneficiaries under the housing programme.

The Centre has already approved the construction of 1 lakh houses under PMAY-G in West Bengal.
The latest survey could help the state identify eligible beneficiaries for these housing allocations and support the implementation of the rural housing programme.
PMAY-G is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible rural households for constructing pucca homes with basic amenities.
West Bengal has previously recorded significant progress under the scheme, with millions of rural houses sanctioned and completed.
The completion of the 54.6-lakh-household survey therefore sets the stage for the next phase of beneficiary verification, approvals and housing assistance across rural West Bengal.
