Thermal mass refers to a material's ability to absorb, store, and slowly release heat energy. In building design, high thermal mass materials like concrete, brick, stone, and rammed earth help regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, creating a natural buffer against temperature swings.
When sunlight or warm air heats a high-mass material, the material absorbs the heat rather than letting the room temperature spike immediately. At night or during cooler periods the stored heat is gradually released back into the space. This time-lag effect helps maintain a steady, comfortable indoor temperature.
Traditional Indian architecture used thick mud walls and stone construction precisely because of their thermal mass properties. Modern sustainable buildings in India are reviving these principles, using exposed concrete ceilings, brick walls, and tile flooring to reduce HVAC loads in both hot and mixed climates.
Thermal mass is a passive and cost-effective tool for improving a building's energy efficiency and comfort.
