The Assam Cabinet has granted formal approval to deploy ₹2,100 crore for land acquisition and site development for the proposed Aerotropolis Satellite City Project near Guwahati airport.
Chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the cabinet approved the funds under Grant No. 73 of the 2026–27 Assam Budget. Land acquisition has already begun.
The ₹2,100 crore is the first instalment of a total land acquisition cost estimated at around ₹4,000 crore.
Who Is Driving It and Where
The project will be implemented by the Guwahati Satellite Cities Development Authority (GSCDA). The proposed city will come up in the Rani-Bongara region, located near Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Key facts about the project:

Why Assam Needs This Now
Guwahati has been absorbing rapid urbanisation and population growth for years.
The pressure has spilled over into recurring problems artificial flooding, waterlogging and unplanned expansion beyond municipal limits.
Chief Minister Sarma has said the city can no longer handle residential, industrial and institutional growth on its own.
The satellite city is designed to act as a planned pressure valve. By creating new urban infrastructure around the airport, Assam aims to redirect growth rather than simply manage its consequences. The aerotropolis model, which builds an urban economy around airport connectivity, has been used globally to stimulate employment and investment in regions that have historically been on the periphery of a city's economic activity.

A Broader Urban Shift for Northeast India
For Assam, this is not just a housing or infrastructure project. It is a statement about how the state intends to grow.
Sarma has framed the satellite city as a long-term solution to both unemployment and urban congestion, linking it directly to economic opportunity for Assam's youth.
The allocation sits alongside other cabinet approvals in the same session, including ₹450 crore for the Bodoland Territorial Council and ₹118.58 crore for the Chief Minister's Jibon Prerana scheme. The satellite city, however, is the largest single commitment of the session and the one with the most direct implications for Assam's built environment over the next decade.
