Bahrain Advances Muharraq City Plan

The Kingdom of Bahrain is accelerating the redevelopment of Muharraq, rolling out infrastructure and public space upgrades as part of a wider strategy to revitalise one of the kingdom's most historic cities. The move follows the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain's cities and buildings, and of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to implement the executive plan for the development of Muharraq City, according to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA). The renewed push signals continued high-level attention on ensuring the project stays on track across its various components.

Minister Inspects Ongoing Projects

Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, inspected the ongoing development projects in Muharraq City, reviewing progress on the Muharraq Gate project at the entrance to Shaikh Abdulla Avenue, along with the development of Shaikh Abdulla Avenue and Shaikh Isa Avenue around Isa Al Kabeer Palace. The minister said these projects are aimed at preserving Muharraq's architectural and heritage character while modernising its infrastructure, reflecting the dual objective of protecting the city's historic identity while bringing its underlying systems up to modern standards.

What the Upgrades Include

According to the BNA report, the scope of work includes road development as well as upgrades to stormwater drainage, sewerage, and utility networks, carried out in coordination with relevant authorities. The projects also cover improvements to streetscapes, lighting, commercial signage, landscaping, and parking facilities across the area. Together, these upgrades touch nearly every layer of the city's public infrastructure, from what lies beneath the streets to how the streets themselves look and function for residents and visitors.

Parking and Additional Facilities

Al Hawaj also reviewed progress on the redevelopment of Shaikh Hamad Avenue, which extends from the beginning of Muharraq Souq to Shaikh Isa Avenue, along with the construction of two multi-storey car parks offering a combined capacity of more than 300 parking spaces, in addition to other parking facilities being developed across the area. The added parking capacity is intended to support the area's continued redevelopment as both a residential district and a heritage destination for visitors.

Coordination and Quality Standards

The minister was later briefed on the progress and upcoming implementation phases of the various projects. He called for coordination among the relevant authorities, stressing the importance of completing the projects in line with the approved timetable while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. This emphasis on inter-agency coordination reflects the scale of the undertaking, which spans road works, utility upgrades, heritage preservation, and public infrastructure across multiple sites simultaneously within the historic city.
